Do I Need to Pre-Rinse Items Before Loading Them in the Dishwasher?

No. Just scrape food, bones, and other heavy debris off the dishes and place the dishes into the dishwasher. Dishwasher detergents contain enzymes, which find food particles and break them down. If there is no food to cling to, the enzymes can damage your dishware resulting in etched or cloudy glasses and dishes over time. Not sure what Wash Cycle or Cycle Option to use? What Items Should Not Be Washed in the Dishwasher?

In general, anything that is not marked "dishwasher proof" or "dishwasher safe" should not be washed in the dishwasher.

Below is a more detailed list of materials / items that should not be washed in the dishwasher:

  • Acrylic - Crazing or small cracks may occur.
  • Adhesive-joined pieces - Adhesives that join materials such as plastic, wood, bone, steel, copper, and tin may loosen.
  • Bone-handled utensils - The handles may separate.
  • Iron - Iron will rust.
  • Non-dishware items - Your dishwasher is intended for ONLY cleaning standard household dishware and kitchenware.
  • Pewter, brass, bronze - These items will tarnish.

What is the largest diameter plate or pan that can fit in the upper and lower rack?

The upper rack can hold a 10" plate and the lower rack can hold a 12" plate. A 24" cookie sheet will fit in the lower rack when the upper rack is removed.

How many washes will the rinse aid dispenser handle?

A full dispenser will hold enough for about 30 washes.

Unsatisfactory Cleaning & Drying Results

The utensils are not clean.

Be sure to avoid nesting your utensils, which will prevent them from being properly cleaned.

There are streaks on the dishes.

Reduce the amount of rinse aid.

The dishwasher does not wash thoroughly.

There are several solutions for this problem:

  • Spray arm movement may be obstructed – Manually spin each spray arm to ensure they are not blocked. They should rotate freely.
  • Spray arm nozzles are clogged – Remove the spray arms and rinse them under water to loosen debris. Use a toothpick to remove any debris in the holes. After cleaning, reinstall the spray arms. Click here to watch how to clean the spray arm.
  • Improper use of detergents – Increase or decrease the amount of detergent depending on the water hardness and food debris. Please refer to your owner's manual for more information.
  • Clogged filter – Remove and rinse the filter and its components under lukewarm water. Gently use a scrub brush to remove the particles. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Click here to watch how to clean the spray arm.
  • Dishes are nested or loaded too close together – Rearrange your dishware so the water from the spray arms can reach all items in the dishwasher. Refer to your owner's manual to learn how to properly load your dishwasher. Click here to watch how to load your dishwasher.
  • Wash cycle is unsuitable for the level of food debris – Select the correct wash cycle for your dish load. Refer to your owner's manual to learn which cycle to select.

If you do not have an owner's manual, you can download it here.

There are water spots or stains on the glassware.

There are two primary reasons for this – hard water and etching. Wash the glass in a bowl of vinegar. If the cloudiness disappears, it is caused by hard water. If the cloudiness does not disappear, it is caused by etching.

  • If it is caused by hard water, adjust the amount of detergent used in the dishwasher. The amount may vary depending on the level of water hardness. You may need to increase the amount of rinse aid dispensed during the washing cycle. Please refer to your owner's manual to learn how to adjust the rinse aid setting. If you do not have an owner's manual, you can download it here. For some models, a softener salt can be used. Refer to your owner's manual to learn if your dishwasher can use softener salt. Softener salt can be purchased in the Thermador Accessories Store.
  • If the cloudiness is caused by etching, it is permanent. You can prevent etching by not pre-rinsing the dishes, using a light wash cycle for glasses, and using the correct amount of detergent (not more than needed).

There is white coating or limescale on the utensils or inside the dishwasher.

There are several solutions for this problem:

  • Make sure your water softening system has been set correctly according to your owner's manual. If required, refill with softener salt. Click here to watch how to load salt in your dishwasher. Not every dishwasher model uses softener salt so please refer to your owner’s manual to see if this applies to your dishwasher. If you do not have an owner's manual, you can download it here. Softener salt can be purchased in the Thermador Accessories Store.
  • If the salt compartment cap is not closed properly, there can be a coating of salt in the machine. Make sure the compartment is closed properly.
  • If there is limescale on the inside of the dishwasher, use a descaler to remove the limescale. This will also prevent damage to the heating system.

The dishwasher dries poorly.

There are several solutions for this problem:

  • The rinse aid setting needs to be adjusted up. Please refer to your owner's manual to learn how to adjust it.
  • A cycle without drying was selected. Make sure to select a cycle with drying.
  • The dishes are not arranged properly. Make sure to arrange your dishes in a sloping position. Refer to your owner's manual to learn how to properly arrange your dishes. Click here to watch how to load your dishwasher.
  • The detergent used has a poor drying performance. Use a different detergent with a better drying performance. You can also use rinse aid to increase the drying performance.
  • Select models have Extra Dry which can be used to increase drying performance. Instructions for activating this function are in your owner's manual. This option adds extra heat to the final rinse and will enhance drying results.

If you do not have an owner's manual, you can download it here.

Please note, plastics take longer to dry than other materials.

What is condensation drying?

All Thermador dishwashers use the condensation drying process to dry items in the dishwasher. Condensation drying does not utilize a heating element at the bottom of a dishwasher. Instead, it involves a number of dishwashing elements that result in an energy-efficient, high-quality drying process:

  • The final rinse uses water that has been heated to a very high temperature. This makes the dishware very hot when the rinse cycle ends.
  • The stainless steel tub of the dishwasher cools faster than the dishware because stainless steel typically cools faster than dishware materials (such as glass and porcelain).
  • Moist air is released from the hot dishware. When this moist air comes into contact with the cooler stainless steel tub, it turns into water droplets (condensation). These water droplets trickle down to the bottom of the dishwasher and are drained in the next wash.
  • Dishware and cups become dry during this condensation process. Plastics tend to have more difficulty drying because plastic does not heat up to a high temperature during the final rinse like glass / porcelain does.

The use of rinse aid, such as Jet Dry®, helps the condensation drying process by reducing the surface tension of water, thus encouraging water to run off dishware effortlessly. We have extensive experience with Jet Dry® and Jet Dry® Turbo Dry® and highly recommend either product to help create an optimal drying experience that reduces the chance of spots and other leftover residues. Approximately 3.5 drops of rinse aid are dispensed during each wash cycle. Use Jet Dry® for your regular drying needs. Use Turbo Dry® if you are drying a lot of plastic in the dishwasher or if you are already using a detergent with a rinse aid included in it and it’s still not drying adequately. Purchase these at your local supermarket.

Moisture & Odors

There is water at the bottom of the dishwasher.

A small amount of water around the filter is normal.

The water is leaking from the door.

Water leakage may be caused by the following:

  • The incorrect detergent was used - Only use dishwasher detergents. Do not use dish detergents. If suds persist, add one tablespoon of vegetable oil to the bottom of the dishwasher and run the desired cycle.
  • The door seal pulled away - The door seal may have caught on dishes that extend beyond the sides of the dishwasher rack. Push the seal back into place (near the inside edge of the dishwasher).
  • The condensation vent is blocked - Remove anything that is blocking the condensation vent (on the side of the dishwasher). Blocking this can cause the dishwasher to leak from the door instead of venting properly via the condensation vent.
  • The dishwasher is improperly installed - The dishwasher “feet” must be leveled properly. If not, gaps at the top of the dishwasher door may occur. In this case, adjust the “feet” accordingly. Please also have the installation verified by qualified personnel. They should check the water supply, drainage, leveling, and plumbing.

The dishwasher contains a lot of odors.

Odors can occur in the dishwasher due to the following reasons:

  • This may be caused by infrequent usage. Run a pre-rinse program once in a while to help prevent odors. You can also use a dishwasher cleaner to maintain your dishwasher and keep it clean.
  • There is food debris on the bottom of the dishwasher and the filter needs to be cleaned. Remove the filter and rinse it under lukewarm water. Gently use a scrub brush to remove particles. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Click here to watch how to load your dishwasher.
  • There are food particles near the door seal. Wipe with a damp cloth and dry with a soft cloth.
  • There is residual water at the bottom of the dishwasher. Ensure the unit has completely drained from the last cycle. Refer to your owner's manual to learn how to activate the drain. If you do not have an owner's manual, you can download it here.
  • The drain hose is obstructed. You will need to have an authorized Thermador servicer remove any obstructions from the drain hose. Click here to schedule a service visit. Ensure the drain hose high loop is between 20” and 50” above the ground.
